Health and Treatment: With the Labour Government in power in the UK, changes have been made to the way hospitals in the NHS receive funding for overseas visitors requiring treatment in the UK.

A resident of the Bailiwick of Guernsey is considered an overseas visitor under NHS rules. The funding available for the treatment of Guernsey residents has been set at a level equal to the money spent by the Board of Health on the treatment of UK visitors and temporary residents to the Bailiwick.

To that end, UK visitors will receive healthcare under the same provision as local residents. They will continue to receive free hospital care but will have to pay for any primary care treatment provided by GP's, Dentists or Physiotherapists. They will also have to pay for St. John Ambulance and Rescue Service for ambulance usage.

Lost Property: The Guernsey Police Force Tel: +44 (0) 1481 725111) has a well-run lost property department. Do notify your bank and the police if you lose your chequebook or credit cards.

Shopping Hours: Most shops open 6 days a week from 9 am to 5.30 pm all year round. Only certain shops open on Sundays.

Information Centre: If tourists have any problems or queries they can go along to the Tourist Board's new Information Office opposite the Crown Pier, St Peter Port, Tel +44 (0) 1481 723555. The office opens 7 days a week during the high season.

Newspapers: All the UK national newspapers and periodicals arrive in the island by air at around 6 am daily. Guernsey Evening Press is the "local rag."
Post Offices - Most are open Mon to Fri 8.30 am to 5 pm, Sat 8.30 to noon. Town offices are in Smith Street and Commercial Arcade.
