Ladies love it, kids think it's cool, men and boys do it quickly - what is it? Shopping of course
Shop till you drop. Let's go on a tour around Guernsey and see what we can find, I am sure you will see what you have in mind.
From watches to waistcoats, lingerie to leisure wear, Guernsey's town shopping centre is a place where shoppers can find all their wants and needs. Hours can be spent browsing around the main shopping streets and arcades in St Peter Port. Some of the stores on offer here are well-known such as Woolworths, Benetton, Marks and Spencer and their fabulous food hall, Creaseys which owns the M&S franchise. Next fashions, Dorothy Perkins, Shoestring, Etam, Evans with its Essence range, Boots the Chemist etc.
There are quite a lot of jewellery stores where bargains can be picked up. Perfume, tobacco and wines and spirits can all be picked up duty-free. There is a limit on what can be taken back but this can be explained at the local Customs and Excise Dept or at the harbour or airport.
VAT is not charged on the island: There are shops that sell designer wear for ladies and gents, boys and girls. Jewellery shops that sell names like Gucci, Pulsar, Seiko and all the usual big-brand names, and for the discerning bargain buyer the aptly named PoundWorld is a place where one can go and browse and pick up good quality bargains for a pound a time. For the extra special gift the Notre Monde store in the Pollet sells beautiful, timeless pieces which are a joy to have. The Body Shop, Gruts, Clobberbox, No. 19 store, Guernsey Press, Machons the Jeweller, the list goes on. You'll just have to come and have a look won't you.
The Bridge shopping centre: St. Sampsons hosts a wonderful array of shops too. The Guernsey Press, Kids Kingdom for toys, Health Food Shop and Johns the Butcher (check out the stir-fry). Book Shops, Liscensed Book Makers, Public Houses, Jewellers, Shoestring, Stonelakes the Chemist etc. Like I said before you'll just have to come and see for yourself. It will be great, make it a date.
St.Peter Port Town Market: Until the mid eighteenth century, street markets were held from Berthelot Street, down High Street to Cow Lane (a small lane that runs from Church square to the harbour)
These eventually became unpopular as the smell of fish, meat and rotting vegetables, noise of the assembly and packs of vermin attracted by the offal did not go down too well with worshippers in the church. The fruit market even used to shelter in the church during bad weather
A special feature about all of the town markets is that the smell of one is left behind as you wander into the next. With no mechanical ventilation aids, the building is so designed that the natural draughts take the smells upwards and away, a feat most modern markets cannot achieve even with extractor fans.
Every Year during the summer months, the 'Old Guernsey Market' sets up in Market street, on each Thursday afternoon. This consists of stalls of local crafts served by ladies and gentlemen who dress in the old Guernsey costume.
